Montpelier president and construction magnate, Mohed Altrad is getting used to hearing the phrase “conflict of interest”. The French Rugby Federation (FFR) confirmed the shirt sponsorship deal for the national team with the Altrad Group this week despite the LNR (the body representing pro clubs in France) requesting more time to investigate potential conflicts.

The five year deal worth a reported €7 million (£6.2m) per year will run until the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

FFR’s Bernard Laporte has stated that their ethics committee had found that the new deal with Altrad would not create a conflict of interests and said he would take note of the report’s recommendations “to ensure a sense of impartiality”.

Laporte is currently being investigated by the public prosecutor after he was accused of influencing a disciplinary decision against Montpelier while having a personal image rights contract with the Altrad Group.

Altrad supported the FFR’s successful bid for the 2023 RWC. He was also involved in a bid to purchase a majority share of Premiership club Gloucester but was frustrated by concerns over ownership of more than one club competing in the same tournament.
