Draper Departs RFL After Just One Year

Less than a week after news of Nigel Wood’s departure and a month before the start of the season, RFL chief commercial officer and Super League executive director Roger Draper has announced he will also be leaving the organisation.

Draper, who joined the RFL just a year ago after two years as chief executive of Warrington Wolves, has confirmed his intention to leave the organisation at the end of January to commit time to his other business interests.

An RFL statement reported that “he leaves the sport in a strong position with commercial revenue up 19% in 2017 and a number of new commercial deals and renewals set to be announced in the coming weeks”. But his departure would seem to imply that considerable change is about to shake-up the running of Super League.

Speaking following the announcement, Roger Draper, said: “As a huge fan of the sport it is with a heavy heart that I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave the Rugby Football League.

“It was always my intention to come into the organisation for just a couple of years and give everything to bring more commercial revenue into this great sport. With a number of significant commercial announcements due in the coming weeks and the new season about to begin, I believe that now is the right time for me to move on.
